Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional therapy commonly used to treat low back pain, neck pain, tension headaches, migraines, TMJ pain and osteoarthritis of the knee.  Research has shown that Acupuncture is effective in providing short term relief  from the conditions above.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

This is the first question and the most common question that I am asked, my answer is; no it doesn’t.

The idea of having acupuncture needles inserted is understandably not a very nice one, however you may be surprised at how painless acupuncture can be, usually patients are expecting a lot of pain when the first acupuncture needle goes in, and are always surprised that they didn’t feel a thing. The  acupuncture needles are extremely fine so that they can be  inserted very quickly, reducing any pain.

The only sensation felt during an acupuncture treatment is when the needles are manipulated to get a feeling of the Qi moving to that needle, this is usually described as a dull ache or a tingling sensation which passes very quickly.

Is it safe?

All Acupuncturists have to be registered with the British Acupuncture Council and local authorities, to ensure all treatments meet health & safety requirements, the needles used during treatment are single use sterile needles which is standard practice for registered acupuncturists.
